Blaze rips through Millville dwelling
Story By John Carr
Correspondent 1st Responder Network
May 19 - A fire on Friday morning, caused extensive damage to a single-family dwelling and left one woman displaced.
The Millville Fire Department was dispatched to 327 S. Second Street for a report of a dwelling fire at 9:04 a.m. Upon arrival, the first-in engine (E-30) found heavy fire showing from the first-floor front windows and side porch, and heavy smoke from a 2.5-story wood-frame dwelling.

Engine 30 laid in with a 4-inch supply line. Its crew then stretched a 2-inch line and attacked the fire from the front.  A second line was then placed into service. Chief Kurt Hess arrived on the fire ground and determined that additional personnel and equipment would be required.  He ordered a second alarm at 9:16 a.m., which brought Vineland Station 2 (South Vineland) and Cumberland County Station 13 (Laurel Lake) to the scene.   He also ordered an off-duty personnel recall.

Engine 36 laid a 4-inch supply line and positioned to the rear of the dwelling and went into service with two hand-lines.  Ladder 35 raised its main on the A side and Ladder 32 went into service on the D side.  The fire, which had extended to the second floor, the attic and the roof, was brought under control in about 45 minutes.

The first floor sustained heavy fire, heat and smoke damage. There was heavy heat and smoke damage to the second floor and extensive fire damage to the roof.  The dwelling was of balloon-frame construction with blown-in paper insulation which required firefighters to remain on the scene for nearly three more hours performing overhaul.  Forty firefighters, utilizing four engines, two ladders and a rescue, fought the blaze.

Millville Fire Department Trains with "live" fire
May 10 - Regular training was anything but regular when MFD went to the Cumberland County Training Center's burn building to drill with live fire.
Crews were put through three scenarios each involving both burn rooms.   Two of the simulations were set up as basement fires with extension to first floor.  The other drill was a first floor fire extending to the second.

Emphasis was on initial attack and stretching a second hose line to back up first crew.   Three non-officers filled the role of Incident Commander to gain experience.

Brush fire involves live electrical wire
May 3 - A live electrical line that powered lot lights at Alcan on Sharp Street required Atlantic City Electric response.
A wire (center of picture) near the edge of the woods fire was found to be energized by MFD using a "hot stick" to test for electricity.  Once the wire was found to be live fire suppression was delayed until Atlantic City Electricity de-energized the line.

Motor Home fire leaves little more than ashes

April 4 - Millville Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on - South bound Route 55 at mile marker 25.

First apparatus on the scene was Engine 30 which had to work their way though a half mile of backed up traffic due to the fire.

Upon arrival they found a 28 to 30 foot Winnebago motor home fully involved in fire.

MFD had to use extreme caution during the attack of the fire as the vehicle had a full tank of propane on board.  The tank's relief had been activating periodically releasing propane gas into the air which immediately ignited creating a ball of flame on the left side of the motor home every minute or two.

The fire crew extinguished the fire involving the remainder of the motor home while allowing the propane to burn off.  Engine 35 and Engine 36 were utilized to shuttle water to Engine 30 for the fire attack.

Both southbound lanes of Route 55 were shut down for approximately 20 minutes. One lane of traffic was allowed to pass the scene after the fire was extinguished.

The owner of the motor home stated he smelled something while driving and pulled to the shoulder of the highway.  He got out of his vehicle and looked in the engine compartment found the engine on fire.  The driver, his wife and their pet dog escaped unharmed but the motor home was a total loss.
