Fast-moving fire claims 3 lives in Millville and injures 2 firefighters
Millville Fire Dept. responded to an intense, fast-moving fire in a single-family dwelling that claimed the lives of three of the four residents at 103 North Eighth St. on July 14.
Cumberland County Communications dispatched the alarm at 2:11 a.m. as a working fire with entrapment.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire coming from the front and rear of the single-story home. Firefighters conducted a primary search but had to “bail out” the front window due to the extreme heat inside the dwelling.

The fire took the lives of a 28-year-old mother and her two sons, ages 9 and 2.  The children’s grandmother, who was asleep in another bedroom, was able to escape the flames and smoke.

Police and Fire investigators were called to investigate the cause and origin of the fire. Investigators believe the blaze to be accidental in nature and caused by burning candles used for lighting in the living-room foyer area. There were no working smoke detectors in the home. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries during the fire.

Apparatus on scene were Engines 30 and 36, Ladder 35, Rescue 34, Deputy 31 and Deputy Chief 32; with a total of 27 personnel operating on the fire ground

Initial attack (right) and rescue (left) begins. Intense heat forces Firefighters Terry Fawcett (kneeling) and Doug Pettit (bailing out) to exit via the A-side window, with assistance by Deputy Chief Steve Alcorn and Firefighter Greg Maines (right). Fully-involved C-side. Fully-involved C-side.

Serious accident causes substation fire resulting in power outage
August 3 - A motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Fairton and Hogbin Roads caused unknown injuries along with a power outage that affected a wide area of the city.
A flashing light standard was knocked down during the accident which caused  arcing of overhead wires.  The arcing resulted in a circuit breaker fire at the Atlantic City Electric substation on Route 47.   The two connected events were over three miles apart.

The fire and resultant breaker failure resulted in a wide area of the city losing electricity for a period of time.

MFD Responded to another circuit breaker fire and was reported in the June 2005 News page: www.millvillefire.org/News Archive/News/june_2005.htm

27 Personnel and 4 apparatus responded to the incident covering two scenes.
