Commercial vehicle extrication - A first for Rescue 34
MILLVILLE, N.J. - Millville Fire Dept. performed its first "official" extrication since their new Rescue 34 was placed into service last year.
Members of MFD and Millville Rescue Squad (MRS) worked together to successfully extricate a victim from a tractor-and-trailer versus a Sport Utility Vehicle crash that resulted in one fatality on October 11.

Assisting in the rescue were Fairton Fire Co., Millville and N.J. State Police, and Cumberland County Health and Public Works Dept.

For years, the city of Millville has had a fairly unique situation in this area of public safety. MFD has performed fire suppression duties at crash scenes while MRS performed both medical and rescue operations. The relatively recent acquisition of Rescue 34 by MFD along with the rescue squad’s extrication vehicle being out of service led to this “first” for Millville Fire Dept.

Information provided by career Firefighter Keith Mitchell.

Extrication training at Cumberland County Fire Academy
With the addition of Heavy Rescue 34 to the fleet of Millville Fire Department's apparatus extrication training has been a top priority.
Each year Cumberland County Fire Academy offers a series of classes resulting in emergency services personnel being certified as Extrication Technicians.   A large percentage of this year's class was the Millville Fire Department.  Shown below are pictures during several portions of the classes.

'Third Alarmer' still responding to the call
Arthur “Ott” Upham has been a member of the Millville Fire Dept. for over 40 years and remains an effective and valuable member of the company.
Ott continues to respond to the fire hall when the alarm sounds. These days, he mostly mans the alarm room, facilitating communications and keeping records of fire calls.

Recently however, Ott responded to a small brush fire while the main portion of the company was occupied with another call.  Pictured above: The "Third Alarmer" returns to the station in command of Brush 38, driven by Capt. Howard Hee in the background).

Ott is one of a group of long-time Millville firefighters affectionately known as “Third Alarmers”. This group of men continue to serve MFD in whatever way they can, these many years after responding to their first alarm.

Other “Third Alarmers” include Sumner Lippincott, Bill “Knuckles” Nichols, Dave Vanaman and company photographer Dale Wettstein.

The Millville Fire Dept. is proud to have young firefighters as well as seasoned “Third Alarmers” working together and continuing to play an active and effective role in serving their community.

MFD Honor Guard at NJ State Firemen's Convention

WILDWOOD, N.J. - The Honor Guard of the Millville Fire Dept. truly considered it an honor to present the Colors at the New Jersey State Firemen’s Convention on September 15 and 16.
For the second year in a row, the Honor Guard from Millville proudly fulfilled their duty during the two meetings of the New Jersey State Firemen's Association. More than 7,000 fellow firefighters and dignitaries, including Congressman Frank A. LoBiondo (Friday) and Governor Jon S. Corzine (Saturday) attended the meetings.

Friday’s duty was a brief presentation of the Colors during the Pledge of Allegiance and the playing of the National Anthem. Saturday’s assignment was to stand in honor during the annual Firefighter Memorial Service for brother firefighters whom had passed away or were killed in the line-of-duty over the previous year, as well as present the Colors.

The Millville Fire Dept. Honor Guard is led by Firefighter Christine Tonetta (Capt. of the Honor Guard), Firefighter Tracy Fawcett, Larry Fawcett, John Garton, Bill Stadnick, and MFD Captains Terri DelVicario and Ric Tucker.

Other functions of the MFD Honor Guard have included a special request by the Rio Grande Fire Dept. to attend the funeral of a member who died in the line-of-duty, 9/11 Memorial ceremonies, Christmas and Memorial Day parades in Millville, as well as standing guard at viewings and funerals of Millville Fire Dept. members.
