The Millville Fire Department responded to a fire on East
Broad St. near Manor Avenue. (across from Custard Corral) where they
found a commercial vehicle / industrial-size wood chipper on fire.
The chipper is used by contractors to process debris
from demolished buildings and chop them into small pieces. The
fire call came in at 1:54 PM, on February 19th. MFD was on the scene for
more
than an hour. 24 firefighters responded to the call utilizing
Engine 30, Brush 38, and Engine 35
Engine 30 was first to arrive and found the conveyer belt on the
machine fully involved with fire. Firefighters on E-30 pulled a 1-1/2" hose line,
stretched it to the fire and started to
extinguish the fire. Other personnel deployed a 2" line
off of E-30 to attack the fire from the other side.
After the fire was under control, the owner of the
equipment used an excavator to contain oil and hydraulic fluid that leaked out of the
chipper while it was on fire. The County Health
Department was notified because of the fluids that had leaked onto the
ground.
