Aircrafts Landing Gear Collapses While
Landing
January
10, 2005. An aircraft emergency call came in from the Millville
Airport at 10:26 AM. MFD responded with five pieces of apparatus,
three Chief's cars and a total of 24 personnel.
A 1964 Piper Twin Comanche Model PA 30 had it's landing dear collapse
while landing. The aircraft slid approximately 500 feet on its belly
before coming to a stop. There were injuries, fire or fluid leaks.
The scene was turned over to officials of the Delaware
River and Bay Authority (DRBA) who runs the airport until the National
Transportation Safety Board arrived.
DRBA requested Millville Fire Department to return when they were
prepared to lift the plane off the runway. MFD returned at
12:51 PM and stood by as three tow vehicles lifted the plane. The
plane was elevated and the landing lowered and locked into position.
The aircraft was then towed off the runway.
The airport was closed to air traffic during the entire operation until
the aircraft was removed from the runway..
