Cumberland County Firemen's association recently named "The Crew of Engine 30" as co-recipients of the "Firefighter of The Year" award for saving a victim's life during a house fire.

On February 24th at 09:00 hours the Fire Department responded to a house on Archer Street for a reported dwelling fire with entrapment.  Upon arrival the team consisting of Career Firefighter Curt Lowe, Lieutenant Howard Hee,  Firefighters Larry Fawcett, Rick Lappine, and Charlie Schaffer began search and rescue while fighting the fire.

In spite of intense heat and heavy smoke conditions Firefighter Schaffer and Lieutenant Hee searched the apartment for the resident while Firefighters Fawcett and Lappine battled the blaze. Career Firefighter Lowe operated Engine 30 and maintained the critical water supply enabling the attack crew to fight the fire and the rescue possible.

While Firefighter Schaffer controlled the fire the resident was found in the bathroom of the apartment.  The victim was rescued by being pulled out of the smoke and heat filled apartment by Firefighters Lappine, Fawcett, and Lieutenant Howard Hee.

   Past Chief Bill Horton Retires

Bill Horton retired from the Millville Fire Department this month.  He was member of the Millville Fire Department for over 35 years and was Chief from 1985 to 1988.  He was honored with a plaque in the Millville City Commission Chambers during a recent meeting.  A job well done Bill.  You will be greatly missed!

   Fire at the Former King Homestead

On June 2, 2001 a fire broke out in a house that was in the process of being demolished in preparation for the new Super Wawa (regional convenience store) coming to Millville at Main and Sharp Streets.  The structure was quickly engulfed by flames.   35  Firefighters, 3 engines, 1 ladder and a rescue truck were involved in quenching the blaze.  The Millville Fire Department was on the scene for almost 4 hours.  One firefighter was slightly injured while fighting the fire.  He was taken to the emergency room at South Jersey Hospital System Millville Division where he was treated and released.
