Working Fire on G Street – 2/19/2015

Posted by on Mar 14, 2015 in Dwelling Fires, Latest Events | No Comments

On February 19, 2015, at 1016, Station 30 was dispatched to a reported kitchen fire.  Car 30 arrived with nothing showing from the exterior.  When checking the second floor, the Chief encountered a heavy smoke condition.  A second alarm was requested.  Engine 30 arrived on location, laid a supply line, and made an interior attack.  A primary search of the first floor was conducted with negative results.  A third alarm was then struck for manpower due to heavy winds and frigid temperatures.  The scene was cleared at 1411.

Thank you to all who came out and assisted – Station 29, Station 2, Station 13, Station 15, Squad 98, Millville Police, Station 87, and American Red Cross.

Working Fire on Mulberry Street

Posted by on Mar 14, 2015 in Dwelling Fires, Latest Events | No Comments

On March 9, 2015, at 0249, Station 30 was dispatched to 601 E. Mulberry Street for a dwelling.  Multiple callers reported heavy fire at the dwelling possibly extending to their own homes. Upon Engine 34’s arrival, Captain Lippincott reported heavy fire on the second floor of 603 E. Mulberry Street.  The crew hit the hydrant at 6th and Mulberry and went into service with an 1 3/4″ line.  The crew noted that there was no fire or smoke on the first floor and continued to the second floor.  The fire on the second floor had extended from the front bedroom into the hall way on the second floor and into the third floor.  The crew knocked down the fire in the hall and front room and started up the stairs to the third floor.  At that time, a second hand line was brought up to the second floor to protect the egress for the first crew.   IC called over the radio to the interior crews that there was a fire on the first floor.  The second interior crew backed their line to the first floor stairs and were met with fire.  They attempted to extinguish, but were unable to and instead, held the fire back until the third floor crew was able to get out.  Thanks to the quick thinking and bravery of BC Larry Fawcett, FF Terrence Fawcett, and FF Ryan Gandy, Captain Michael Lippincott and FF Christine Tonetta were able to escape the third floor and all five firefighters were able to find temporary refuge on the front porch roof.  FF Scott Haley threw an extension ladder to the porch while FF Donald Campbell, despite explosions from the first floor, held the fire back, so that those on the porch roof could get down.  The fire attack went to a defensive mode and was brought under control at about 0520.  Overhaul and clean-up was done and the scene cleared around 0900.  Investigators left the scene at around 1200 and returned on Wednesday to complete the investigation.

Thank you to all those who helped us and the families out that night – Station 29, Station 2, Station 13, Station 87, Millville Police, Millville OEM, Squad 98, Salvation Army, American Red Cross, and Peter Wine.

429 N. Third Street – January 6, 2015

Posted by on Jan 10, 2015 in Dwelling Fires, Latest Events | No Comments

At 8:22 PM on January 6, 2015, Millville Fire’s A Platoon was dispatched to a reported working fire in a vacant dwelling with structural damage.  Upon arrival, Captain Hallquist reported that the first floor was fully involved and then went into service with the blitz force.  A second alarm was then struck for a career staff recall.  Once there was more personnel on scene, other lines were pulled for the surround and drown and  Ladder 32’s ladder pipe was put in service to finish off the bulk of the fire.   Once the fire was brought under control, a search of the building was conducted and the fire investigation was started.  Crews cleared the scene around 01:45 AM and finished cleaning equipment and replacing hose at the firehouse around 3 AM.   At 10 AM, the investigators returned to the scene bringing a NJ State Division of Fire Safety Arson K-9 to assist in the investigation.  The crew cleared the scene at 11:30 AM.  This fire is still under investigation.

Despite efforts of keeping the area salted, two firefighters were injured, one treated at the scene and the other was transported to Inspira, from slip and fall incidents.

Busy Day for Millville Fire

Posted by on Oct 14, 2014 in Dwelling Fires, Vehicle Fires | No Comments

October 13th started early with a working house fire and remained a busy day for the city’s firefighters.

At 06:49, an all-call alarm was struck for 323 E. Oak Street with fire showing from the basement.  Upon arrival, the crew found fire showing from the D side basement windows and heavy smoke coming from the eaves of a 2 1/2 story balloon frame single family vacant dwelling.  A second alarm was struck and the crew made a quick exterior knockdown of the basement fire.  Once a RIC was established and access was made through forcible entry, crews were able to do a primary search and open up walls to stop the extension.  Those on scene were stations 2, 29, 87, Salvation Army, Squad 98, OEM and MPD.  Station 13 covered Station 30 and handled calls in town.

At 08:10, County advised command of a reported dwelling fire at 317 E. Vine Street (almost directly behind the active incident).  A third alarm was struck, Station 13 responded from the alarm call they were on, and command was able to break off crews from the Oak Street fire.  Upon arrival, the crews found fire showing on the D side exterior of a 2 1/2 story vacant duplex.  The crews were able to knockdown the fire and do a search of the vacant home.  Due to the swiftness of the teams on scene there was no extension into the home and the scene was brought under control quickly.  Those on scene were stations 1, 2, 13, 15, 23, 29, 87, OEM, and MPD.

Scenes were cleared, gear cleaned, and crews released around 11:00.

Everybody did an excellent job and the MFD Officers and Firefighters thank all who came out to help.
